History

The congregation of Fisherwick was founded in 1823 as Fisherwick Place Church and was based in what is now the Presbyterian Church in Ireland’s headquarters, Church House, in the centre of Belfast.

By the end of the 19th Century, Belfast had expanded enormously, but many of Fisherwick’s members had moved away from the city centre and the Session decided that the church should move to be closer to the congregation.

The original building was sold to PCI and Fisherwick moved to its current site on the Malone Road.

The new church building was opened in 1901, with new halls being added in 1924 and there have been substantial alterations and renovations since most recently a £2.3m project which was completed in 2019.

The church is an impressive and significant local landmark, so much so, that in recent years we have tourists coming to visit!

Fisherwick has had nine Ministers in its 200 year history: Rev. Dr. James Morgan, Rev. Dr. Henry Williamson, Rev. Dr. Charles Davey, Rev. Dr. John Waddell, Rev. Dr. Jack Withers, Rev Dr. David Lapsley, Rev. Dr. Derek McKelvey, Rev. Michael Anderson and Rev. Andy Galbraith. Each Minister brought their own distinctive emphasis and their legacies are part of the DNA of Fisherwick.
